So, there’s good news and bad news when it comes to Fable, the most powerful Claude model.
Good news first: Fable won’t be yanked from all Claude plans, Anthropic announced late Friday. The bad news? Those on the most affordable Claude tiers will have to pay extra for continued Fable access.
Starting July 20 — today — Claude Max and Team Premium members will continue to have Fable 5 included in their subscription plans, at up to 50 percent of their weekly usage limits. Claude Max plans start at $100 a month (going up to $200/month), while Team Premium plans go for $100/month per seat.
But the story changes for Claude Pro ($20 a month) and Claude Team Standard ($20/month per seat) plans. Strictly speaking, those tiers will still get Fable access, but only via usage credits, which cost roughly as much as paying per token via the Anthropic API.
Anthropic says it will give Claude Pro and Team Standard users a $100 one-time credit in light of the change (I haven’t seen the credit hit my Claude Pro account yet), but still, the new policy means Pro and Team users will be paying a lot more to use the Fable 5 model.
Anthropic’s revamped Fable access policies say a lot about how the big AI providers will be handling their flat-rate subscription plans moving ahead. Namely, it’s looking more and more like the latest, most powerful AI models won’t be included in the cheapest plan tiers.
For now, OpenAI is bucking the trend, keeping its latest flagship model — GPT-5.6 Sol — included in its $20/month ChatGPT Plus plan. ChatGPT Free and Go subscribers don’t get GPT-5.6 Sol access, although they can use the less powerful Terra and Luna flavors of GPT-5.6. But it’s not clear what will happen with the eventual GPT-6 makes its debut.
Meanwhile, all Google Gemini users get access to Gemini 3.1 Pro, but that model (which was launched back in February) is getting long in the tooth.
Claude subscribers were initially furious that Fable, which returned in early July following a U.S. government export ban, would only be included in their plans for a limited time.
But Anthropic, perhaps goaded by the release of OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 models, kept extending the deadline, and eventually repeated a promise to eventually return Fable to Claude plans.
As it turned out, Fable never did leave the list of Claude subscription offerings, but as we’re now seeing, not all Claude plans will have Fable on the menu.
