The original Mac gets a starring role in ‘Mayday’ Apple TV promo

As bitmapped animations play, the Mac crashes–the sad Mac tone is a nice touch. Branagh pulls out the tool every Certified Apple Technician had with them at all times: a paper clip, but just any paper clip, though, an “authentic 80s paper clip.” If you’re not familiar, a paper clip could be inserted in a small hole next to the floppy drive to manually eject a disk. It really was a vital tool.

The promo ends by reminding us all of the nightmare that epitomized the floppy disk era: the dreaded floppy disk shuffle. Reynolds reaction was exactly that of Mac users everywhere in the 1980s.

Mayday set during the 1980s Cold War, is about an American Navy pilot (Reynolds) who crash-lands in the Soviet Union. He meets an ex-KGB agent (Branagh), and hijinks ensue. It’s not clear if the Mac plays a role in the movie, but you can find out this Friday, September 4, when the movie lands on Apple TV.
