I’ve reviewed a ton of mechanical keyboards, and unless you count the disco rainbow that is the RGB strobe lights, there aren’t many that dazzle me. 8BitDo’s Retro Keyboard is an exception, thanks to great parts, great functionality, and great (if not universal) style, all packed into a $100 package. Today, it’s going for just $64.99 at Best Buy.
The Retro Keyboard is a tenkeyless design (i.e., no number pad) with a chunky, old-fashioned style that deliberately evokes the original Nintendo console from the 1980s. But despite its old-fashioned looks, it’s packing some of the latest tech, including both 2.4GHz wireless for gaming speed and Bluetooth for interoperability. It has some quality Kailh BOX White switches, which are loud and clicky for satisfying typing. But if that’s not to your liking, you can switch it up (pardon the pun) thanks to hot-swap sockets, compatible with any standard Cherry MX-style keyboard switches.
Other highlights include high-profile keycaps with quality PBT plastic and a fun extra NES-inspired button pad included in the box. Like the rest of the keyboard, these buttons are programmable using 8BitDo’s software, and the switches underneath can be swapped out. This Best Buy package also includes a separate arcade-style joystick, a great bonus if you want to really embrace the retro gaming vibes. This keyboard comes in a lot of different colors and flavors (I do not suggest you actually eat it), including a sweet Mecha Break version and a translucent green model evoking the original Xbox. Several of them are currently discounted, but this bundle on the original NES colorway from Best Buy is the best price—and again, free joystick. Pretty cool. For other Black Friday deals, be sure to stick around at PCWorld.
