CISA Urges Stronger Security for Automatic Tank Gauge Systems

WASHINGTON – The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and government partners published a joint fact sheet today with recommended mitigations to protect automatic tank gauge (ATG) systems from being compromised by cyber threat actors targeting U.S.-based ATG systems. Recommended actions for owners and operators to implement include using strong passwords, removing ATG systems from the internet, and auditing and monitoring logs.

The ATG systems are widely used throughout the Energy, Chemical, Food and Agriculture, and Transportation Systems Sectors for automated and remote monitoring of storage tank parameters, including fuel and liquid levels, temperature, and possible leak detection. If an ATG system is compromised, a cyber threat actor can disrupt or manipulate critical functions and increase the risk of undetected leaks, environmental hazards, and physical damage.

“CISA works shoulder-to-shoulder with our government partners to identify, assess and respond to reports of malicious cyber activity targeting critical infrastructure systems and networks,” said CISA Acting Director Nick Andersen. “We urge all organizations using ATG systems to review this join fact sheet and implement recommended actions. As always, CISA stands ready to provide voluntary support and resources to aid organizations in responding to and recovering from incidents.”

This fact sheet was developed in partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), National Security Agency (NSA), Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and Department of Agriculture (USDA).
