If you like GeoGuessr, then you’re going to love TimeGuessr. Although they’re made by different developers, it takes that same basic idea and adds a twist. Instead of scrolling around Google Maps, you’re given a random picture from history and you have to figure out where the photo was taken and when.
Each round gives you a photo to study. From there, you drop a pin on a world map and pick the year you think the picture was taken. The closer you get on both guesses, the more points you earn, with up to 5,000 points available for each.
Just like in GeoGuessr, it’s all about hunting for the tiny clues. Car models might point you toward a certain time period. A street sign could narrow down the country. Clothes, hairstyles, buildings, landmarks, and even the graininess of the photo can all help you nail the point in history.
I like TimeGuessr because it tests a slightly different knowledge set than GeoGuessr. Knowing your geography is impressive, but being able to hit the mark based on your knowledge of history, pop culture, and your general sense of what different decades looked like feels even more rewarding. And even when you fail miserably, at least you’ll learn something from the answer and context provided at the end.
TimeGuessr has different modes such as daily challenge, random games, or community-made games. There’s also an option to create your own five-photo game and share it with friends. Go ahead and give it a shot, it’s a blast and you’ll learn something too.
