Scrcpy is a useful tool that lets you mirror and control your Android device from your Windows, macOS, or Linux computer. Oh, how I wish it was just built into every Android phone. Not only does it turn your phone into a window on your desktop, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities.
The first thing I use it for is typing. Answering long text messages or emails with a full-size keyboard is much faster than pecking away on a phone screen—maybe Gen Z can type faster on a phone, but not me. And that’s only the beginning. Scrcpy is also great for recording app demonstrations, taking screenshots, testing Android apps, and even playing mobile games with a keyboard and mouse or controller.
Unlike many phone mirroring apps, Scrcpy is free and open source. It doesn’t require you to create an account or install anything on your Android device. Connect your phone to your desktop with a USB cable (make sure to enable USB debugging!) and you’re ready to go. Wireless mode is available too once you’ve completed the initial setup.
It’s very low latency too, so video streaming is smooth and the controls are quick. Also, because it runs locally, there aren’t ads or cloud services getting in the way. You can even copy and paste text between your computer and phone, drag and drop files, and open multiple Android devices at the same time if needed.
