Over the weekend, Microsoft released an unscheduled Windows 11 update, identified as KB5121767 for users on versions 24H2 and 25H2. The patch is intended to resolve an issue that’s occurring on a limited number of devices following the latest Windows updates.
Microsoft highlights this in the official release notes. The issue primarily affects certain Dell PCs and laptops running an Intel driver for the so-called Intel Innovation Platform Framework (Intel IPF)—the same machines that were blocked from receiving some Windows updates.
What the update fixes
According to Microsoft, after installing the latest Windows updates, some devices may experience changes in system performance, increased power consumption, or unexpected system behavior. This is caused by a conflict with the Intel IPF drivers.
Those drivers are responsible for functions relating to power management, temperature control, and performance optimisation. If they don’t work correctly with Windows, problems with battery life, system performance, and/or system stability may arise.
Microsoft had therefore temporarily blocked the rollout of July’s security update KB5101650 for affected systems. With the newly released update KB5121767, this block has now been lifted.
Which devices are affected
Microsoft states that only a limited number of systems are affected. Reports primarily mention newer Dell models, including various Precision, XPS, and Pro Max devices.
According to Microsoft, the vast majority of Windows 11 users don’t need to take any action. The company expressly recommends installing the update only on devices that are actually affected by the bug.
How to get the update
Anyone who has enabled the option “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” in Windows Update will automatically get KB5121767. Alternatively, the update can be downloaded and installed manually via Settings → Windows Update. Microsoft also makes the package available via the Microsoft Update Catalog.
After installation, the Windows build number will increase to:
- Windows 11 25H2: Build 26200.8894
- Windows 11 24H2: Build 26100.8894
As this is a cumulative update, KB5121767 also includes all previous security and quality improvements from earlier updates. In addition, Microsoft is updating several Windows AI components to version 1.2605.856.0, including features for image search, content recognition, and semantic analysis.
Who should consider this update
If your Windows 11 PC has become unusually slow following the July updates, is using more power than usual, or is behaving strangely, it may be worth installing KB5121767. This applies in particular to owners of recent Dell devices with Intel processors.
On the other hand, if your computer is running smoothly, Microsoft says you don’t need to do anything.
