It doesn’t have to be that way. I don’t even remember where I saw it recommended, but several years ago someone pointed me to a company that takes rollerblade wheels and puts them on office chair casters. Proper bearings, sturdier construction, and smooth polyurethane that rolls easily over carpet and doesn’t scratch up your floor.
The brand is The Office Oasis (there are lots of cheap knockoffs, but these are the original), and it’s only about $40 for a set of 5 casters in a variety of colors. Installing them is trivial—office chair casters are designed to simply pull off and pop on without tools.
I took a chance and couldn’t believe the difference. My chair glided so easily that when I put it on a section of floor that was just a little bit uneven, it just started rolling on its own. They’re whisper-quiet, too. You don’t realize regular office chair wheels are noisy until you get some that aren’t. And now my chair doesn’t need a big plastic sheet to protect my tile floor.
The wheels also made my office chair just a tiny bit higher—about half an inch—which is a nice little bonus for a tall guy like me that usually has my chair extended up as high as it will go.
