Ambient sounds and soundscapes can be great tools to help you get in the right headspace. Sometimes you need a little rain, a crackling fire, or the hum of a café to really lock in (or chill out). Plus, they’re kind of addictive once you start using them. Here are my favorite ambient sound sites to set the mood:
A Soft Murmur
A Soft Murmur gives you a clean set of sound sliders—rain, thunder, waves, wind, even a coffee shop—and lets you mix your own perfect background in seconds. You don’t need to sign up for an account either, so you can drop in anytime and start listening. The site is great for simple and relatively effortless custom soundscapes which you can dial in for whatever vibe you want to create. It’s the audio equivalent of setting the mood lighting just right.
Ambient Mixer
If A Soft Murmur is a simple lazy river to effortlessly flow to, Ambient Mixer is the deep end to endlessly explore. This site has thousands of detailed soundscapes built by other users—everything from moody environmental vibes to eerie sci-fi ambiences. My personal favorites are “Gryffindor Common Room” and “On a Ship at Sea.” Each mix uses layered audio tracks that you can tweak yourself. It’s part ambient tool, part creative playground. If you’ve ever wanted your workspace to feel like a fantasy tavern, a dark and stormy night, or a spaceship cockpit, this is the place to go.
MyNoise
MyNoise feels like it was built by a professional sound engineer—oh wait, it was! The site offers a huge library of generators from nature sounds to tonal drones. Many are designed with focus, relaxation, or even tinnitus relief in mind. Just like the other sites, customization is a standout feature. Practically everything can be fine-tuned with sliders and presets. It’s a bit more technical than the other two sites, but once you find your setup, it’s incredibly immersive.
If you haven’t tried working with ambient sound before, start with one of these. You might be surprised how much easier it is to focus—or relax—when your environment sounds just right.
