Keeping tabs on your PC’s temperatures and hardware health is one of the easiest ways to spot problems before they turn into crashes, slowdowns, or failing components. A good monitoring app can show you your PC health in real time. And while there are plenty of tools out there, I keep coming back to three free apps:
HWMonitor
My go-to recommendation for most people is HWMonitor. It’s clean, simple, and gives you the important stuff right away: CPU temperatures, GPU temps, fan speeds, voltages, and drive health. All of the info is displayed in one window where you can instantly see whether your PC is cooking itself alive or running normally.
HWiNFO
If you want the full command center experience, though, grab HWiNFO instead. This app goes even deeper. It tracks almost every sensor and stat possible your hardware puts out, from motherboard temperatures to memory timings and SSD wear levels. For power users, it’s extremely helpful because it can help diagnose crashes, overheating, thermal throttling, and power issues. While the amount of data can feel overwhelming for those unfamiliar with component parameters, it’s one of the best and most comprehensive PC monitoring tools around.
Core Temp
Then there’s Core Temp, which is perfect if you only care about your processor temperature. It’s tiny, lightweight, and focused entirely on CPU thermals. I like using it on laptops or older systems where I just want a quick way to see if the processor is getting too hot under load. For my main desktop, I typically use one of the other apps because I have other component stats that I want to track though.
I keep at least one of these installed on every PC I use. They’re all free, lightweight, and can save you from discovering a cooling problem the hard way.
