Every spring in the Dutch city of Utrecht, thousands of fish attempt to migrate through the city’s canals to reach spawning grounds, but locked flood gates stay shut for long stretches to manage water levels. So the city came up with a weirdly charming solution: a fish doorbell.
The site, called Visdeurbel—or Fish Doorbell—lets anyone in the world help the fish out. When you visit the site you can open a live underwater camera feed pointed at the gate and watch for fish gathering nearby. Spot enough fish waiting around? Hit the digital “doorbell” button and alert the local water managers. If conditions are safe, they’ll open the lock and let the fish pass through.
It sounds like a joke, but it’s totally real, and extremely popular. Last year the site claims to have had over 30 million total visits from 2.3 million unique visitors around the world. The project helps species like bream, perch, and pike move through the canal system during migration season. The crowdsourced alerts also help researchers study fish behavior and migration patterns in real time.
It’s just the kind of quirky, calming pastime that I dig. Plus, I can just keep the site open on my other monitor while I’m working and check in whenever I have a second. It’s basically casual fishwatching with a purpose. Some days the camera is quiet. Other days I’ll see schools drift by like an underwater traffic jam. There’s even a live chat where viewers celebrate sightings together.
