Today, you don’t even need to physically visit your local library to enjoy the books it offers. If you have a library card, there’s a good chance you can borrow eBooks, audiobooks, comics, movies, TV shows, and even music without ever walking into a branch. My two favorite apps for this are Libby and Hoopla, and they’re both completely free through participating libraries.
Libby
Libby is the app I recommend if you mostly want ebooks and audiobooks. It connects directly to your local library’s digital collection, so just about anything in print you’ll find in person will be available on this app. The catch is that popular titles often have waiting lists. If every copy is checked out, you’ll need to place a hold and wait your turn.
The upside is that Libby usually offers a larger selection of bestselling books, magazines, and new releases. The app is clean, easy to use, and works across Android and Apple devices such as phones and tablets. It also supports most e-readers and web browsers.
Hoopla
Hoopla takes a slightly different approach. Instead of waiting in a digital queue, most titles are available instantly. Your library gives you a set number of monthly borrows, and you can use them on ebooks, audiobooks, movies, TV shows, comics, or music.
Its catalog isn’t always as deep as Libby’s for new books, but the instant access is hard to beat. So if you decide you want to start an audiobook on your lunch break, chances are good you can begin listening right away.
Fortunately, if your library supports both apps, there’s no reason to choose just one. I use Libby when I’m after a specific bestseller and Hoopla when I want something to read or watch without waiting. If you can’t get to the library, these apps are the next best thing—old book smell not included.
