I spend most of my day at a keyboard, so I type a lot. I thought I was pretty good until I tried out an online typing test and was quickly humbled. Since then, I do a few minutes of practice every day to improve and my favorite site to use is 10FastFingers. The site gives you one minute to type as many words as you can without tripping over your fingers.
Your score shows up in words per minute (WPM), along with your accuracy. A fun way that 10FastFingers differentiates itself is through gamification. Your score increases exponentially with each correctly typed word. But mess up too many words and your score tanks, which makes it weirdly addictive.
There’s also a competitive side if you want it. You can race other people in multiplayer typing matches, compare scores on leaderboards, and test yourself in different languages. But honestly, the basic one-minute challenge is the real draw for me. It’s fast, satisfying, and a good reminder of how much I need to improve.
The simplicity of 10FastFingers makes it easy to sneak in a quick test during a coffee break or while waiting for files to download. And if you type for work every day like me, you’ll probably notice something else: after a while, you actually get faster. I can’t promise that you’ll be “movie hacker” fast, cruising through lines of code faster than Neo can read them, but you’ll notice that banging out emails and docs starts to feel smoother. That alone makes it worth bookmarking.
You might even be able to improve your speed by ditching the QWERTY layout. Also, don’t forget to up your shortcut game at the same time as your typing speed for maximum efficiency.
