Microsoft has finally put an end to all speculation, making it clear that the next major update for Windows 11, known as Windows 11 26H2, will be released in Fall 2026. We can expect plenty of new features in this version, but Microsoft is emphasizing that Windows 11 26H2 is designed to simplify future updates and overall Windows maintenance.
Windows 11 26H2 will be rolled out via an enablement package. This means that the code for this version of Windows has already been deployed to eligible Windows computers, and that code is just waiting to be activated by Microsoft with a future update.
In other words: Windows 11 26H2 won’t arrive as a massive download, but as a comparatively small package that simply unlocks the features that are already present but hidden within Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 and not yet activated.
Microsoft writes in this Windows IT Pro blog post:
The next annual update for Windows 11 is coming soon and is already available to Windows Insiders! Windows 11, version 26H2 continues our focus on delivering a predictable, low-disruption update experience for organizations and IT professionals.
For devices already running recent versions of Windows 11, this release should be easy to adopt. It builds on the same platform and servicing approach introduced in prior releases, while continuing to improve how updates are delivered, tested, and deployed.
Microsoft promises the following benefits for computers currently running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2:
- A small, quick installation
- Minimal disruption for users
- No need for a complete reinstallation or complex deployment procedures
- The same source code base
- The same security and quality updates
- The same compatibility check
When will 26H2 be released?
Microsoft hasn’t given a specific release date for Windows 11 26H2 yet, but has mentioned the second half of 2026. Businesses will benefit from this timing, as it’ll make it easier and less time-consuming for them to update their Windows 11 computers.
For now, if you want to try Windows 11 26H2 ahead of its full release, you can do so via the Windows Insider Program. As of June 19th, Microsoft has made 26H2 available via the Experimental channel, which you can learn more about on this Windows Insider blog post.
The hardware requirements for 26H2 remain unchanged: a minimum of 4GB RAM, 64GB of storage, and a 1GHz 64-bit dual-core processor.
