Microsoft is stepping up the pressure on Windows 10 users by winding down support for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. After August 2026, Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 will no longer receive new features, and only receive security updates for customers with an active Office subscription.
The change was announced on this support page, which says that Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 will stop receiving feature updates and Copilot support once version 2608 is released:
Devices running Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 will receive feature updates and Copilot support (where eligible) until Version 2608 is released. Devices will remain on Version 2608, receiving only security updates until October 10, 2028.
According to Windows Latest, version 2608 is expected to roll out this month. This means that if you’re still using Microsoft 365 on a laptop or desktop PC running Windows 10, you’ll no longer receive new features for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the other Microsoft 365 Apps once that version 2608 update rolls out.
After version 2608 is rolled out, Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 will keep receiving security updates until October 10th, 2028. After that date, both feature and security updates will cease altogether.
Regarding OneDrive specifically, Microsoft says:
Devices running the OneDrive desktop app on Windows 10 22H2 will continue to receive updates through October 10, 2028. On devices running an older version of Windows 10, the OneDrive desktop app will no longer update.
Unsurprisingly, Microsoft advises Windows 10 users to upgrade to Windows 11 as soon as possible. Remaining on an unsupported operating system like Windows 10 “can cause performance and reliability issues when running Microsoft 365 Apps.”
