If you are replacing the system drive in a computer — for example, by swapping the manufacturer’s original SSD for a larger one — you should definitely create a Windows image beforehand. This will save you from having to reinstall all your programs and manually restore your previous settings after the new drive has been installed.
As an image file is often several hundred GB in size, we recommend using a shared folder on another PC in your network as the backup destination. Windows also includes an image tool, so you won’t need any additional hardware or software for this backup.
To create the image, open the Windows Control Panel by typing system into the search box on the taskbar. Then click on the Control Panel result. Under the System and Security heading, please select Backup and Restore (Windows 7) and, in the following window, Set up backup.
Windows will now search for devices suitable for storing this backup. As soon as this overview appears, click on the Save on a network… option in this window, located on the right-hand side below the large Save backup on box. You will then see a login screen with the heading Select network address.

Under Network address, specify the share where you wish to save the image. To do this, click Browse and wait a moment until Windows has scanned your network for available devices and displayed the relevant shares. Then select the desired share.
Now enter a valid username and the corresponding password for this share and confirm by clicking OK. Windows will then create an image and copy it to the other PC via the network connection. You can then shut down your computer and install the new hard drive.
However, the new drive is empty: You must therefore first install Windows on it by booting your computer from a DVD or USB stick containing the original Windows files. You can obtain everything you need to create such an installation medium from Microsoft.
During installation, select the default configuration — it will be overwritten anyway when you install your saved image. Then, via the Control Panel, run Backup and Restore (Windows 7) and click on Select another backup to restore files from.
Select Browse for a network location, select the share where the image file is stored, and log in. Now select the image to begin restoring the saved Windows system.
